Contact Report: LAX Northside Study and Visit from Marion Blakey, FAA Head
Bill R, Karen Dial, and I were each interviewed on Ch 5, 7, 11, 13 about
what another expansion meant to Westchester-Playa del Rey... We also spoke
with NY Times, LA Times, and Daily Breeze reporters. We were definitely in
the minority at the Downtown Chamber's Luncheon that had about 250 people.
After a diatribe that the FAA wants the runways expanded, I managed to get
two questions asked and sort of addressed during Q & A.
1. In view of the sky being near capacity again during peak hours, what is
FAA going to do? Regarding constant descent of aircraft being a benefit
that saves fuel and lowers noise, why did the FAA cancel the So Cal airspace
redesign so that it can't be implemented? ANS: no real answer, refered me
to Ian afterwards.
2. Since the FAA has been studying AMAS and runway lights since 1991 and
they are still in "evaluation" when will be get them at LAX? ANS: They're
looking more seriously at them for us, but nothing is set. It's up to us to
request?!! (and I know we've done so many times)
At 7 PM KCRW 89.5 FM Which Way LA... Warren Alney, host I will discussing
Blakey's pronouncement with Ian Gregor, FAA; Gary Toeben, Pres LA Chamber.
It was a spirited discussion with Ian and Gary saying expansion is a forgone
conclusive need and I politely disagreeing...
I expect that we will be working out a deal with all involved to get the
NASA safety study going.... There's much passion by all to ensure that no
safety issues go unaddressed. Bill Rosendahl was his usual outstanding,
outspoken support for us.
